Receiving Respite Care

The Communitas’ Children and Adult Respite Care Programs, located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, provide parents and primary caregivers with periodic relief from the challenges of caring for a child or adult who has a developmental disability. The intent of respite care is to strengthen the family unit and to give a much needed break to those providing daily care.

Through the Respite Program, qualified caregivers provide temporary care in the caregiver’s home to children or adults with a disability. For the individual with a disability, short-term visits outside of their home environment provide exciting opportunities to make new friends and participate in a wider range of experiences essential for their growth and development.

Access to the Communitas Respite Care Program is by referral from Community Living British Columbia for adults, and by referral from the Ministry of Children and Family Development for children.

Providing Respite Care

Respite caregivers are adults from various walks of life – married or single, with or without children, who open their homes to people who have disabilities. Communitas carefully screens and interviews all potential caregivers. Families requesting respite care are directly involved in the decision-making and planning process regarding the care needs of their son or daughter in their temporary home environment. This ensures peace of mind for parents and primary caregivers.

Respite

Respite care allows parents to spend time with family and friends, or to be on their own for a time of rest. It also allows for focused attention on other children, or time to address stressful life events.
