The Community Living Program seeks to support adults who have developmental disabilities who are living in community.

A referral from the Community Living British Columbia (CLBC) is required to participate in this program.

The program helps a client acquire life skills to the greatest level possible in areas of personal development, learning about home responsibilities and becoming more involved in their community.

On a personal level an individual will learn:

  • Time management and communication skills including asking and following directions, making and keeping appointments
  • Personal responsibility, managing their anger and/or frustration

In the home setting an individual will learn:

  • Practical day-to-day skills such as housecleaning, laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, clothes shopping, banking and bill paying
  • Social skills and how to get along with others

In the community setting an individual will learn how to:

  • Interact with the general public
  • Take the bus or other transportation options available

The Community Living Program staff also works with clients to assist them in building a network of support people within the community. When a client encounters a new situation, staff will accompany the client, providing support and assistance as required. Staff will also meet with clients on a regular basis to encourage them and to discuss any issues the client may have.

Graduation

Graduation from this program occurs when the person is able to successfully function in the community without the assistance of the Community Living Program.

This is the ultimate goal for every individual enrolled in this program and completion is determined by a joint conference that includes the client and his/her support team.
